Zauder Kann Den Frieden Erhalten

P1030476

Saturday, i had lunch and did a little walkabout/bottle-hunt with the bitches (Steph and Miss Tay). Saturnight i had dinner with Lee Si (no huihuihui) and Michelle (ma belle, these are words that goes together well, my Michelle). Sunday I went to Kinokuniya to look up some reference books, and then met up with Sabrina for quick lunch and coffee at Library @ Orchard.

When i finished drinking my bloody coffee (not very nice) Sab Sab Sab left. Near the library cafe, they were holding a little session by someone from Goethe Institute. It was about German culture and a short crash-course on the German language. The speaker, Mrs. Renate, was quite funny and she spoke about the different places, history, architecture, and famous people in Germany. It was a little session because.. the turnout was quite bad: 15 people and some Koreans who kept shuffling in and out of the area. But there were people from the cafe listening. Really, it does not surprise me why the library has to close shop come November 30. Nope.

Before the session ended I asked Mrs Renate what the German words on my tshirt meant:
"Zauder Kann Den Frieden Erhalten".
It can be loosely translated into "Magic can conserve peace on earth"

Cute! Then i went off to look for my Spice Girls Greatest Hits. Gramophone and That CD Shop carries only the normal version. So i had to walk all the way to HMV for the DVD + CD version. RARARARARA. Then i took the train back.. and when i alighted at Khatib, i saw Mrs. Renate! Fate, thou hast shown thy hands. She lives here and chuckled (the best way to describe her expression) when she saw me. We walked together for a while before saying bye.

Then Claire (who was suppose to come over) said she wasn't coming, so here i am, whacking away on the keyboard in McDonalds. This weekend has been pretty good with good company and some sweating and the events meeting running smoothly, and nice meals with good friends.

Anything beats the monotone working days, really, but this is PRETTY GOOD in a really PRETTY GOOD way: I GOT TWO BIRTHDAY PRESENTS THAT ARE OUT OF THE WORLD AMAZING AND NOT JUST PRETTY (though they are pretty pretty. aye, sorry for the SHOUTING). There are only two things i like more than a good cup of milk tea: the beatles and paper products. (I can tell. Because i cannot live without any of these for long.)

Photographs, whales, wood are so cool, very cool, too cool. Thank you miss tay, leeeee tennnnng, candy . The photo frame is marvelous. Its out of the world cute. And you know, i love cute things (no i am not referring to me-myself-and-i).

Postcards are one of my favorite paper products. I really really love postcards. When people write letters it means the person is trying to tell you something or convey some message (agenda agenda).. But a postcard means the person is thinking about you, in the most casual/daily-life way possible. (like an SMS, but less lazy) What happens when the greatness of paper and beatles converge? 'Ringo Starr: Postcards From The Boys' happens. A whole hardcover book of postcards from Lennon Macca George (and others who dont matter to me) to Ringo. The most awesome book ever. I need to digest all its intense goodness. Excellent commentaries from Ringggggooooo, amazing visuals (postcards from the UK circa 1980 are the klassic).

Because you guys v. poor thing, here are two of my favourite postcards:

Thank you vannie vicky vanvan vanessa Would you tell me how could it be any better than this?!

Yeah. Ich bin Karen, ich denke den 'Zauder Kann Den Frieden Erhalten'. Und sie?

PS: I dont usually blog in this format (as in what i ate where i went what cats i smacked today..) but this weekend is too cool-beans to not chronicle in this little blog of mine. I don't think i can blog like this much because i am a very lor-sor person and i talk (write) too much and it'll bore your asses off. Just want to say thank you to all 'units' involved in making my weekend great. You know who you are la hor. (Even vannie's boyfriend who helped pretend not to see me. Get it?) Its not the gifts, its the people. (though the gifts were drastically fantastic already!) And yeah i am pretty happy as you can tell. And i swear to maintain this blissful state! And as far as i can tell the next few entries are going to be about the spice girls so you've been warned!

hi there, actually I noticed your lj from the post about "surpressed librarians". well, we met briefly at the german talk, yup, i am one of the librarians at library@orchard :p

i do agree that the turnout was quite bad for the programme, not all programmes work out, the more popular ones tend to be about business/finance and wellness...

anyway, u seem to be more aware abt the library world, not many ppl know abt the Msc, an entry position with the designation "librarian" in NLB requires a min Bachelor's.

Hi Jillian. Thanks for dropping by and leaving a message (Oh no! The internet is too easy or librarians are too good with the whole web-crawling thing... Seriously how did you find your way here?!).

The programmes are fine; I can easily find a handful of friends who are interested (not the popular ones in finance and business though). But there is not much publicity for people who don't frequent the library, which then results in the poor turnout.

Regarding my 'understanding' of the librarian world: when i was in primary school i had aspired to be a librarian because i was from the
library club and i fell in love with pushing the trolley about with my friends, 'skating' on the floor much to the envy of onlooking school mates. And i became fascinated with the barcode scanning and stamping of books to the point that i stamp my own books for fun.

When i was in secondary school i read too much and being inquisitive, i did a little digging and found out more about the elusive world of librarianship. I did slap myself twice when i found out that i had missed the 'behind-the-scenes' tour during the library week.

Plus i've never met a bad/rude librarian before, which made me think maybe librarians enjoy their work too much. Maybe i'll become your
colleague when i get my degree.

PS: Don't tell anyone i owe the NLB 3 dollars in fine.

- Karen

Hi Karen,

Yup, u've found the answer (great potential for future librarianship!) :))

If you do decide to become one, you can: still push the trolley and scan them barcodes (even tho that's not the main part of the work lah). Cos we do help out with the circulation work although that's usually done by the library officers.

My personal opinion is that librarianship is a blend of the arts (the quest for knowledge, joy of reading part) as well as the sciences (the info management, info systems part) so it keeps ppl like me who are always curious abt stuff and also easily bored with normal office jobs, pretty happy! There's only the occasional grr but it comes along with any customer facing job, and being a librarian is abt helping ppl access information/'books'.

Thanks for your comments on how we can better market our programmes, tis true that a lot of the publicity is within the library space, maybe we can find some sort of niche online!

Its terrible that today, the library is very much associated with 'mugging' for us students. People don't seem to have the interest or attention span to read or look up on an area of their interest. :(

You guys are definitely doing a great job already. I love the blog that you've got going. And the pamphlets that I got from the library are all very well-designed and interesting (i've never noticed them before).

See you soon!

Alas, it does seem that way for most students one finds in the libraries nowadays.

But! I also think that it's not whether you change the whole lot, but if even a few are inspired to be curious or what we do does make a difference in some people's lives, we shouldnt stop doing it! :D

Hope to c u at our closing event (http://blogs.nlb.gov.sg/orchard/librarian-says/youre-invited-libraryorchards-moving-on-party/)!

Nobody can do everything, but everyone can do something.

1) I'm going to pay my fines ASAP and start going to the library as a habit again.
2) I'm going to talk my friends into doing the same.

I thought we have to RSVP before last week? I think i'll be there. See you!
